Is it time to break up with your sports bra?

Is it time to break up with your sports bra?

You may have had some good times together, and it's supported you when you really needed it. Although it can be tempting to hold on to your favourite bras, especially the old-faithfuls which are oh-so-comfortable and easy to wear, you need to break up with your sports bra when it doesn't support you as well as it used to.

It's not me, it's you... With general wear and tear, the elasticity in your sports bra is lost and the fabric breaks down, so it no longer offers you the ultimate support you need. If you wear your sports bra 3-4 times per week, you'll need to replace it at around 12 months. However, if you rotate between 2-3 sports bras then you are likely to get between 18-24 months. It's time to replace your sports bra when you notice that your breasts start having a wider range of motion, or it has a noticeable looser fit.

I'm not ready to let go... Want to make your sports bras last longer? Always read the label, as many sports bras can be machine washed. However, to prolong the life of your bra we recommend that you follow these instructions.

· Hand wash your bras in cold water
· Use a delicate detergent
· Drip dry

· Use harsh detergents as this may bleach or degrade the lace and elastic.
· Wring them out
· Put them in the dryer

If you don't follow the care instructions on the label, the underwire could pop out from its casing. Not only can this make your bra unwearable, the wires can damage your washing machine. The bra hooks and eyes could also get caught in the fabric of your bra. Unhappy days.

Can I wash my sports bra in the machine?

Most manufacturers recommend that their bras are hand washed only. There is a good reason for this - if the bra care label says to hand wash only, then this will be how the bra has been wash-tested. It could be that the wires used are not designed to go in the washing machine. Always read the care label first and follow its instructions. We know bra washing is tedious and time consuming but following the instructions will prolong the life of your bras.

Should I use a lingerie wash bag for my sports bras?

Many women don't have time to hand wash; so if you intend to machine wash, try to minimise the trauma by fastening your bras first. If they are left undone, they can tear or be pulled out of shape, or the wire could buckle. Place the sports bra in a good lingerie bag, set your machine to a delicate cycle on the lowest temperature, and drip dry. Please note that most manufacturers recommend hand wash only.

Can I tumble dry my sports bra?

Never tumble dry your sports bras. Even on a low-heat setting, the temperature may still damage any elastane in the fabric.

Brava Bra Fitter's tip:

"I do my bra washing in the shower and hang them on my rail. By the time I come home from work, they are dry and ready to wear again."
