What a strapless bra needs at D cup
All of the support in a strapless bra comes from the band — there is no strap contribution. At D cup, this means the band needs to be bought on the tightest hook and worn in: as the elastic relaxes over time, you'll move to looser hooks and the bra will continue to fit. If it's comfortable on the loosest hook when new, it won't hold by the end of the day. Silicone grip on the inside of the band helps prevent rolling and riding down, but only functions effectively if the band is already firm against the skin — silicone grip is not a substitute for the correct band fit.
Cup height matters at D cup. A cup that's too shallow will allow the breast tissue to overflow over the top of the cup as the day progresses — which is uncomfortable and untidy. Look for cups that fully contain the bust when you lift your arms and move around. Testing in the fitting room with movement (arms above head, bending forward, walking) tells you more than standing still.
