Underwire Bras

The underwire is one of the most misunderstood parts of a bra. It doesn't provide support — the band does that. What the underwire does is define shape: it separates the breasts, frames each cup, and prevents the bust from migrating outward or forward through the day. When it's the right size and correctly positioned, it's invisible. When it's wrong — too short, too wide, too narrow, sitting on tissue — it's the most uncomfortable thing you can wear.

How to know if an underwire fits correctly

The underwire should sit completely flat on the chest wall and ribcage — not on any breast tissue. At the front, the centre gore (the piece between the cups) should sit flat against the sternum. At the sides, the wire should clear the outer edge of the breast tissue and sit in the soft space under the arm. If the wire pokes, lifts away from the body, or sits on breast tissue at the sides, it's the wrong size or wrong brand — not the wrong style.
