Encapsulation vs compression
The two main approaches are encapsulation and compression. Encapsulation supports each breast independently in a structured cup, usually with an underwire and engineered seams; this is the approach that works at higher cup volumes because it directs support around the breast rather than pressing it inward. Compression flattens the breast against the body and works well at A–C cup, but at D cup and above it can't stop bounce on its own.

Sizing and fit
A well-fitted high-impact sports bra has the same band fit principles as a regular bra — firm, level around the body, supporting most of the weight from the band rather than the straps. The straps shouldn't carry the load.
