The Complete Sports Bra Guide for D Cup and Up

The Complete Sports Bra Guide for D Cup and Up

If you've tried to exercise in a sports bra that doesn't work for your size, you already know this matters. But for D cup and up, the problem goes beyond discomfort — it's structural. Most mainstream sports bra ranges stop before your size, and most generic sports bra advice was written for a B or C cup. This guide is written specifically for larger cup sizes.

At Brava, our fitters help women find the right sports bra every day. Here's what works.

Why this matters more at D cup and up

Research from the University of Portsmouth — the world's leading breast biomechanics research group — found that breasts can travel up to 14 centimetres in a figure-eight motion during running: up and down, side to side, and forward and back simultaneously. For a D cup, that translates to 2–3 inches of vertical movement per stride. At larger cup sizes, it's more.

The tissue responsible for keeping breasts in position is Cooper's ligaments — connective fibres that run from the chest wall through breast tissue to the skin. Once these stretch, they don't recover. It's a one-way process. A properly fitting sports bra significantly reduces movement and strain on those ligaments — and this matters more, not less, as cup size increases.

Encapsulation vs compression — the concept that matters most

Compression sports bras press both breasts against the chest wall simultaneously. They're effective for smaller cup sizes and low-impact activity. For D cup and above, compression alone is insufficient — the force required to meaningfully restrict movement becomes uncomfortable, and breast tissue still moves as a unit within the compressed space.

Encapsulation sports bras hold each breast in its own structured cup, the way a regular underwired bra does. Each breast is contained and moves as little as possible within its individual cup. This is the mechanism that actually works for larger cup sizes at high impact.

Some sports bras combine both: encapsulation cups with an outer compression layer. These can be very effective at larger cup sizes. But if a sports bra doesn't have individual cups, it's relying on compression alone — which is a problem if you're D cup and above.

High impact vs low impact — what you actually need

Not all exercise is equal. The right sports bra depends on how much your breasts move during an activity.

High impact (running, HIIT, aerobics, netball, tennis): You need an underwired encapsulation sports bra with firm cups and a snug band. This is non-negotiable at D cup and above for running. Styles that get this right: Panache Endurance Non Padded Wire Sports Bra and Freya Active Dynamic Non Wired Sports Bra. Although the Freya is wirefree its the exception, it offers amazing support.

Medium impact (cycling, gym training, dancing): A combination encapsulation-compression style, or a well-supported wirefree encapsulation bra, works well. Our favourite is The Shock Absorber D+ Sports Bra but it sells out quickly. The Elomi Energise Multiway Sports Bra is a popular option at this level — it offers good encapsulation support and can be worn multiple ways.

Low impact (yoga, pilates, walking): A wirefree encapsulation bra or a supportive everyday bra will do. Compression-only can work here for smaller D+ sizes. The Panache Wirefree Sports Bra and Ulla Kate Wirefree Sports Bra are both reliable options for low-to-medium impact at larger cup sizes.

Sports bra fit — what to look for

A sports bra should fit more firmly than an everyday bra. The band especially needs to be snug — for high-impact activity, the band is what anchors everything, and it needs to stay firmly in place during movement.

Check the fit while moving, not just standing still. Lean forward, jump, jog in place. If the bra moves significantly, or the cups don't fully contain movement, you need a different fit. The cups should fully encapsulate the breast at all points — no escaping at the top, bottom, or sides.

For encapsulation sports bras specifically, the underwire should sit flush against your chest wall during exercise, not floating on breast tissue. If you need to hold the bra in place or constantly readjust during a workout, the fit isn't right.

Can you exercise without a sports bra at larger cup sizes?

Cooper's ligaments — the connective tissue that gives breasts their shape and position — stretch irreversibly under repetitive movement. At D cup and above, breast movement during exercise is significant enough that the cumulative effect of exercising without proper support is real and measurable. This isn't about comfort alone, though comfort is a legitimate reason too. It's about the long-term effect on breast tissue that can't be undone.

A properly fitting encapsulation sports bra reduces breast movement by significantly more than a standard bra or a compression-only style. For high-impact activity at D cup and above, this is the most important piece of kit in a workout wardrobe.

Getting the right size

Many women wear a sports bra in a sister size or a different size to their everyday bra — trying on and testing is more important than going by the number. If you're unsure of your correct size for sports bras, our fitters can advise during a fitting. Browse all sports bras.
