When your days are spent fitting bras, you hear a lot of the same comments: “I’ve always been this size.” “That can’t be my size!” and “I just grab the same one every time.” At Brava Lingerie our bra fitters work with thousands of fuller-bust customers every year, and there are a few things we wish everyone knew before stepping into the fitting room. These tips can make a huge difference to your comfort, support and confidence.
1. The Size on the Tag Is Just a Starting Point
One of the biggest misconceptions about bras is that the size on the tag is something fixed or personal. In reality, bra sizes should be treated as a guide, not a rule. Our fitters often encourage customers to think of bra sizes as just numbers and letters that help us find the right fit. In many ways, they’re almost like random codes that help narrow down options. Never make your body fit the label. - the goal is to make the garment fit you. During a fitting, it’s completely normal to try several different sizes before finding the right one. What matters most is how the bra fits, supports and feels on your body.
2. Different Brands Fit Differently
Just like clothing, every lingerie brand designs their bras slightly differently. You might wear one size in one brand and something different in another and that’s completely normal. Fit differences can come down to things like:
- Band firmness
- Cup depth and shape
- Strap placement
- Underwire width
- Fabric stretch
Because of these variations, our fitters will often recommend trying multiple brands and styles to find what works best for your body shape.
2.1 Even Within the Same Brand, Fit Can Vary
Many people assume that once they find their size in a brand, every style from that brand will fit the same way. But in reality, different styles are designed for different purposes and that can affect how they fit. Contributing factors can be:
- Some fabrics have more stretch
- Certain styles are intentionally designed to be firmer or softer
- Wire shapes in different styles can affect how the frame sits against your body
- The moulding or panel in the bra may change where the weight will be distributed
Because of this, it’s common to wear slightly different sizes across different styles, even within the same brand.
3. Most People Wear a Band That’s Too Big
One of the most common fit issues our bra fitters see is a band that’s too loose. The band should provide around 80% of the bra’s support, sitting firm and level around your ribcage. If the band rides up your back it usually means it’s too big. When the band isn’t doing its job, the straps end up taking the weight, which leads to discomfort, slipping straps and less support overall. A properly fitted band should feel secure but comfortable, sitting straight across your back without riding up. I like to ask my customers if the bra they are trying on in the fitting room is “noticeable but not uncomfortable”
4. Straps Shouldn’t Do All the Work
Bra straps often get blamed for discomfort, but in many cases the real issue is the band. Straps are there to help with lift and positioning, not to carry all the weight of the bust. If your straps are digging in, slipping constantly, or needing frequent adjustment, it can often be a sign that the band or cup size needs adjusting. It may also be caused by wearing the wrong style bra for your overall frame. When the bra fits correctly, the straps should feel supportive but not restrictive.
5. The Right Bra Should Sit Properly on Your Body
There are a few key signs our fitters look for when checking if a bra fits well:
- The band sits straight across your back
- The centre panel sits flat against your sternum
- The underwire sits on your ribcage, not breast tissue
- The cups fully contain your breast tissue without spilling or gaping
A well-fitting bra should feel supportive, comfortable and secure without digging in or needing constant adjustment throughout the day.
6. Your Size Can Change Over Time
It’s very common for our bra size to change over time. Weight changes, hormonal fluctuations, pregnancy, age or lifestyle changes can all affect how bras fit. That’s why our fitters recommend having a professional bra fitting every 6–12 months, or whenever your bras start to feel different.
7. The Right Bra Can Completely Change How You Feel
Many customers are surprised by how much difference the right bra can make. A well-fitting bra can:
- Improve comfort throughout the day
- Provide better support
- Create a smoother shape under clothing
- Help clothes sit better
- Reduce strain on shoulders and back
- Most importantly, it helps you feel supported and confident in what you’re wearing.
8. Red Marks at the End of the Day Are Normal
A question we hear often is: “Should my bra leave marks on my skin?” In many cases, yes…and that’s completely normal. Bras are designed to provide support, especially for fuller busts, they need to sit firmly against the body. This often means that at the end of the day you may notice light red marks where the band or wires have been sitting. These marks are very similar to the waistband marks from your jeans or the lines socks leave on your skin after wearing shoes all day. As long as the marks fade after removing the bra and the bra isn’t causing pain, rubbing, or broken skin, this is usually just a sign that the bra has been doing its job providing support.
Final Thoughts
If there’s one thing our bra fitters wish every customer knew, it’s this: Don’t focus on the size on the tag. Between different brands, different styles, and natural body changes, it’s completely normal for your size to vary. The numbers and letters inside the bra are simply there to guide the fitting process. What really matters is how the bra fits your body, supports you, and makes you feel.
If your bras aren’t feeling quite right or you’re curious about trying new styles, a professional fitting can help you find the shapes and brands that work best for you. Our team is always ready to help guide you and provide advice.
